10 Things That Contribute to Happiness

Happiness is relative and objective at the same time. It changes from person to person, but there are universal things that make people happy–like a career they like, a partner they love, a supportive family, and loyal friends, to name a few.

But there are also other things that add to the value of life – positive thinking, finding purpose, being part of something bigger and all that.

Then there are the incidentals that just bring you from point to point, making each step a little more pleasant to take.

These small things are not to be taken for granted. They add so little, but make a difference in the grand total.

Try to add as much of these things as you can.

Sleep

Quality rest is vital to your health and daily functions. 8 hours of sleep is not just for children, it’s recommended for adults too, especially active adults who still go to work, and have other activities and responsibilities too.

When you don’t get enough of it and you go through the day feeling tired or aware that you’re lacking rest, it will affect your frame of mind, which affects everything else. Staying positive will be that much harder to attain.

Music

The right tunes can set you up pretty good for the day. It has the power to make you feel good, energized.

Match your music with your mood or mix and match them, it’s up to you. But use it to release your feelings or to shift them to something positive.

With the emergence of music streaming sites and apps nowadays, it’s even that much easier to do just that. There are playlists for every mood, genre, etc. Explore and have fun!

Hobbies

Hobbies are not just to occupy your time, though that’s part of what it is. But the hobbies you choose to make time for should be something you’re really interested in learning. Otherwise you’re just wasting your time.
Make every second count. Hobbies will enrich your life and put more fun in it. Let it challenge you in ways that nothing else in your life does.

Outdoors

Just because you’re not the hiking, camping, trekking type of person doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from the outdoors. It doesn’t even have to be limited to those types of activities.

Just being outside, walking in the park, working on your garden, or lying down on the beach counts as being outdoors.

The fresh air and the nature sounds will help soothe your tired nerves and make you feel brand new somehow. Being out in nature helps stimulate your brain activity as well, making you more likely to come up with fresh ideas once back in the office.

Journals

Not everyone is a writer. But you don’t have to be one to keep a journal. Your journal is just for you, to jot down thoughts, feelings, dreams, goals, etc.

It’s healthy to write them down because it de-clutters your mind, it keeps ideas fresh, it releases emotions, and keeps you focused.

Savings

Knowing you have savings will keep you from feeling anxious about the future. We never really know what’s going to happen and it’s good to be prepared for whatever it is that may come.

Having savings also permits you to budget your operational money more efficiently and use it to spend on experiences that will bring you happiness.

Charity

Helping people out, whether it’s by monetary or other means is a good practice. In helping others, you also help yourself feel more connected to other people, and being in tune with a bigger purpose.

We were put here on Earth to connect with one another. Reach out and help strangers, friends, and families alike. The feeling of being able to give back is awesome and at the same time you realize how fortunate you are.

Indulgence

From time to time, it’s okay to indulge yourself–in beauty pampering, in food, and in other things that aren’t practical.

Life is too short to waste on being safe all the time. You can cut yourself some slack and splurge every once in a while and not feel guilty about it. You have earned it!

Forgiveness

Learning to let go of the past and making peace with it will go a long way towards providing you a clear conscience and no anchors tying you down to any unnecessary negativity in your life.

Knowing how to forgive, and sometimes forgive easily will mold your better character and make it easier for you to block out the noise of pride and vengeance when they start entering your mind.

Conversations

Meaningful conversations with people will help you to connect better. They can also provide amusement, wonder, curiosity, and creativity. Being a good conversationalist, or even just a good participant in one will keep you feeling relevant and on top of things.
